Can AI Build a Website? An Honest Answer

7 min read

AI tools produce a working page in minutes. But does that page actually run a real business? We map the five gaps and the decision threshold.

The Short Answer: Yes, But Which Website?

Over the past year, more businesses have asked us this than the old "WordPress or custom code" question. It cannot be answered in one word, because it is really two questions: can artificial intelligence produce a website, and will what it produces actually run your business? The first answer is a clear yes. The second depends entirely on what you need the site to do.

Today you can tell an AI tool to "build a site for a dental clinic" and get a working page within minutes. It has a menu, a contact form, and it looks fine on a phone. There is no point denying that. But when you place that page next to a real company's requirement list, the gaps always appear in the same places.

This article maps those gaps precisely, shows where AI genuinely outperforms manual work, and marks the point where professional work has to take over. No sales pitch: we will also state openly where we use AI in our own production.

Where AI Is Genuinely Good

Credit where it is due. AI tools now beat human speed on several tasks without a meaningful quality penalty.

  • First drafts and layout: the blank page problem is gone. Making an idea visible in twenty minutes used to take days.
  • Copywriting: service descriptions, product text, question lists. It needs editing, but it beats starting from nothing.
  • Images and icons: it removes the hours lost hunting through stock libraries.
  • Small code fragments: a form validation rule, a table sort. In the hands of someone who knows what they want, it is a serious accelerator.
  • Single-page jobs: an event announcement, a campaign page, a short-lived promotion. Building these with AI is entirely sensible.

If you are reading an article that says AI is useless for websites, that article was written in 2023. The issue is not tool capability. The issue is which question the output actually answers.

Where AI Website Design Hits the Wall

A noticeable share of our incoming projects now start with the same sentence: "I built it with AI, but it did not work out." The reasons cluster into the same five headings almost every time.

One: there is no back end. What gets produced is a shop window. If it takes appointments, there is no panel where those appointments land, no stock tracking, no customer record, nothing connected to invoicing. A business rarely needs the window; it needs the machinery behind it.

Two: the data is not yours. In most tools the site lives inside the vendor's system. Cancel the subscription and the site goes with it. Even when the domain is yours, the structure and content are not portable. This is a dependency nobody notices in year one and everybody pays for in year three.

Three: search visibility stays superficial. The page exists, but heading hierarchy, internal linking, schema markup, page speed and mobile behaviour are usually left at their defaults. For a site that expects to be found, these are not decoration. We covered this layer separately in our article on visibility in AI search.

Four: legal texts and compliance. Cookie notices, privacy disclosures, distance selling terms, refund conditions. AI will draft these, but it cannot tailor them to how your specific business actually processes data.

Five: integrations. Payment gateway, shipping, accounting software, CRM, WhatsApp. In a real business the value of the site sits in these connections. In generated pages this layer is either missing or patched with a third-party plugin.

For Those Searching "Free AI Website Builder"

This search is extremely common, so here is the honest answer: free tiers genuinely work, but they stop in three places. When you want to attach your own domain, when you want the vendor badge removed, and when you want forms and outbound email sent under your own name, you move to a paid plan. In other words, the design part is free; the part that turns a page into a business tool is not.

Starting there knowingly is fine. It is a perfectly reasonable way to validate an idea and find your first customers. The problem is when a temporary solution is used as a permanent one for three years.

Coding With AI: Two Different Situations

There is an important distinction here, and most arguments about AI coding go nowhere because they skip it.

In the hands of someone who knows the stack, AI-assisted coding is a real accelerator today. A developer who knows what they want can read the generated code, spot the mistake, notice the security hole, and predict that a query will be slow before it ships. That is how we use it: the timeline shortens, the responsibility does not.

In the hands of someone who does not, the same tool produces a pile that appears to work but nobody understands. The first time an error appears, movement stops. That is exactly why our rescue work has grown over the past year: the code exists, it runs, and not one line can safely be changed.

We set out when custom development is genuinely required in our custom software article.

Where We Use AI Ourselves

Let us be transparent: we use it, and there is no reason to hide that. We use it for copy drafts, image production, repetitive code, test scenarios and content translation. The chat assistants running on our clients' sites are AI-built as well.

Where we do not use it is equally clear: architecture decisions, database design, security, integrations and delivery accountability. AI is a tool in our process, not the process. When a client calls to say their site is down, the answer has to be the person who built it, not a tool.

If you want to see which line items actually earn their place in a corporate site, our corporate website guide breaks them down.

The Decision: Which One, When?

AI tools are enough for you if: you are validating an idea, you need a single promotional page, you are not expecting revenue from the site, no integrations are required, and you will update the content yourself.

It is time for professional work when any of these appear: you expect a steady stream of customers from the site, you will take payments, you need a panel or booking system, you will operate in more than one language, you want to rank in search results, or continuous uptime matters to your operations.

These two are not enemies. Many of our clients arrive holding an AI-built draft, and that draft turns out to be the clearest brief we could ask for. You can see how the corporate side is built on our web development service page.

What would this cost if we did it? If you already have an AI-generated draft, we assess that too — starting from scratch is not always necessary. Select what you need and see an instant figure with our price calculator.
